Our ancient ancestors sought the Divine through connecting and communing with Nature. Many of you already know that Buddhism is the core foundation of much of my spiritual life. But there is much in other Eastern philosophies, as well as Earth-based religions that I resonate with, respect and celebrate --Tantra, Shamanism, Wicca, Taoism. "Earth-based religion" is a relatively newer term, referring to those who honor all aspects of nature, that nature as a whole is considered to be the source of universal consciousness and energy. (Just so it's clear... no, I don't worship a Devil, sacrifice or burn things--only candles & incense! I honor all that which is LOVE and LIFE!)
Today is Imbolc. Imbolc is a festival of Gaelic origin that goes back to the Middle Ages--a cross-quarter day, or that which marks the beginning of a season. A cross-quarter day is a festival day halfway between a solstice and an equinox. These traditional holidays have a long past as being days of observance by the pagans of Nordic countries and elsewhere in Europe. For Modern Pagans (Neopagans) & Druids it is a celebration day recognizing the midpoint between the winter solstice and the vernal equinox. In the Wicca tradition, Imbolc is often associated with the goddess Brigid, the Wiccan Goddess.
Imbolc is a festival day of many things. It celebrates lactating sheep. The word Imbolc comes from the Gaelic word "oimelc", meaning "ewe's milk." A time to celebrate the first animal offspring. Seeds for food growing are blessed along with agricultural tools. Imbolc is also the festival of the Maiden & Virgin Goddesses. It marks the halfway point of the darkest half of the year. At home, hearth fires are put out and re-lit, and a besom, a broom, is put in place near the front door--a symbol for sweeping out the old and welcoming the new. This day is also known as Candlemas, and candles are lit and often placed in each room of the home to honor the re-birth of the Sun. In many ways, this is like a new year celebration!
In spite of what takes us to the Divine, whatever spiritual path we travel, and even those who doubt... I think we humans need ritual and ceremony in our lives. To take time to celebrate the Earth and the seasons. To sing, to praise, to experience something greater than ourselves!
